I'm filling in this round, so here's my ninth Guess-The-Song Quiz:
[PDF] | [MIDI] | [MUS] | [MSCZ]

The MUS is readable in Finale, including Finale Notepad. The MSCZ is readable in Musescore. All other files are based on the original MSCZ, not the MUS--this explains why the PDF doesn't look like the MUS.
The MUS may display and/or play back bugged. The MSCZ, MIDI, and PDF shouldn't.

This quiz has a theme! Getting the theme correct is worth 2 points. Knowing the theme makes this quiz substantially easier, especially for the obscure melodies. Oh yeah, I repeated at least one song from a previous quiz just to fit the theme.
This quiz also has a bonus question (of sorts)! #??? is worth 1 point (just like all the others). It's an unofficial remix of a VGM theme, and if you know which remix it's from, it basically reveals what the theme is. Note that all notes with X's for heads are meant to be drum beats, not actual notes.
If you've paid close attention to my posts here (and my other appearances on the web), you have a fair chance of figuring out what the theme is.

Don't feel too bad if you only get one or two! Several of the melodies in this quiz are pretty tough, though I did try to squeeze in some familiar ones. PM away!

Due to this quiz being posted late, you can PM answers to me until Thursday, Sept. 28 at 5:00 PM MDT (a.k.a. Friday, Sept. 29 12:00 AM forum default time). I will not count any submissions made after that time, as I'll be too busy tallying results.
Results will be posted shortly afterwards.

Some guidelines for answering, how the melodies are transcribed, and what counts as a correct answer--oh yeah, and some hints right off the bat:
  • You may submit YouTube links/videos instead of game name-song name/best known use pairs.
  • All tempos are approximate.
  • Like last time, I will mark unambiguous songs with the right melody in the right key as correct. If your guess has the right melody in the wrong key, I will mark it as incorrect but PM back that you were close. You can freely guess again until the deadline.
  • With that being said, due to the history of the song for #13, I will accept songs with the right melody in the WRONG key as correct for #13. This applies to #13 only, though.
  • I may not have gotten octave voicings correct in this quiz. If you think you've got the right song but it's off by an octave or two in parts, just guess that song anyway.
  • I may not have gotten articulations correct in this quiz.
  • As before, I PM hints! If you can't figure out the song at all, but you guess the series the melody is from and/or give a YouTube link to a similar-sounding piece, I'll PM back about whether you're on the right track.
  • The more obscure the song, the more generous the hints get.
  • #5, #17, the 5th bar of #18, and #??? are less likely to be completely melodically and/or rhythmically accurate than the rest of the melodies.
  • In fact, the first note of #??? might actually be a whole note smack dab between D# and E.
  • #4's song plays back flat.
  • Again, at least one song has been recycled from a previous quiz.
  • The only series with multiple songs in this quiz are Mario and Kirby. None of the other songs share a series.
  • No two consecutive melodies are from the same series.
  • Yes, there is exactly one Zelda song in this quiz! There is also at least one Pokemon song in this quiz.
  • The following series are not in this quiz (at least the regular section): Shovel Knight, Pikmin, Mega Man
  • The timestamp of #??? is 0:00.

Timestamp: 0:36

Finally, a quiz where I can get away with using Klonoa music! This song fits the theme, after all, despite how obscure it is.

The first note of this melody actually sounds a tad longer in the song, so I did take a couple liberties when transcribing it.

I actually picked this theme partially because it is somewhat slow, so it would throw off those who would otherwise assume that the theme is fast VGM music.

I don't know why, but this song reminds me of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon music. Is it the fact it's in E minor? Is it the orchestration, especially for a boss theme?

This song is pretty famous, so I thought I'd better use it in a quiz. I personally think it's in (flat) D minor, even though I've heard C sharp minor arrangements of it before (to agree with "Bergentrückung", which plays just before it).

Yeah, I did use the melody that takes motives from "Heartache". I marked that song as wrong since it's in the wrong key and meter for this melody.

Man, I wish I could transcribe the Splatfest version instead for this quiz. Its rhythms are a lot easier to transcribe! But sadly, the Splatfest version does not fit the theme, it's in the wrong key, and as much as I wish I could use its rhythms for #5, they're not quite the same as the rhythms of the real answer.

Before I released this quiz, I'd never heard of this theme as "Now or Never!". You learn something music-related every day, as Static pointed out to me that this song is also known by that name.

"That Spinning Star is a Planet", from Kirby: Planet Robobot, used as the title theme
Timestamp: 0:00

Yes, I fully accepted both songs, knowing how much it could potentially throw off theme guessers. I PM'd everyone who guessed the second song that another song that uses #6's melody fits the theme better.

This is in partially because, as a relatively laidback melody, it likely broke a lot of patterns involving my typical quiz music selection process. Thus, it may have made the theme harder to guess.

This is also in partially because I've wanted to transcribe those first 4 bars for a long while now.

Oyyyy, it looks like HAL Laboratory hasn't lost the knack of giving VGM songs strange names from their Earthbound days...either that or something got lost in translation (note that the "Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection" title has been translated from Japanese).

I was probably cruel for picking a section this far into a rather obscure song, but it was the easiest section to transcribe.

I accepted the NES version of this song as correct, even though it's in E minor instead of E flat minor. Untangling the history of this game and this song is a dang mess.

"Mechanical Rhythm" rocks, 'nuff said.

Part of me wants to transcribe this theme in full, and part of me should really just PM daj to make the "theoretically possible" piano transcription of it. It's complex enough, at any rate.

I've wanted to transcribe the first 2 bars of it (sans lead-up) for a long time, at any rate, so I finally did. Y'all got only the first 2 bars because I believe they're distinctive enough to recognize this theme from them.

I wanted to put this theme in my fourth Guess-That-Song Quiz, but it's actually trickier to transcribe than you'd think. Unclear melody notes, bad sound balancing...I may need to trust arrangements of this theme more in terms of what the melody is.

So apparently this song sounds like Yngwie Malmsteen's "Far Beyond the Sun". Heck, it might sound like neoclassical metal in general. Maybe that's why I like it.

...Yeah, I actually picked this theme for this quiz partially because I expected someone in particular to get it correct on the first try despite its obscurity. Luckily, he did.

"Galacta Knight (Kirby Super Star Ultra)"/"Galactic Warrior (Kirby Super Star Ultra: Galacta Knight)", arranged by Jonny Atma of GaMetal fame
Timestamp: 0:00

The "Galactic Warrior" title is from the GaMetal Bandcamp page.

I tend to transcribe drum beats into actual piano notes in my piano transcriptions. I suspect I'd pick those notes for Bar 3 if I were to transcribe this arrangement for real.

There aren't many remixes of Galacta Knight's theme that I like more than the one on the back of the Kirby Super Star Ultra OST CD, and good thing this is one of them. It's reasonably accurate, it keeps the energy and bite, and it even manages to throw in a solo-on-top passage! For some reason, I always find that Japanese remixers mess this theme up.

Galacta Knight's theme is still in my Top 2 Favourite Kirby themes (sometimes, the regular boss theme from Kirby's Return to Dream Land comes out on top), and along with the Halberd themes and the fact I could recognize "Gourmet Race", those few songs got me interested in Kirby music in the first place.

If you got this remix correct, then the theme was pretty much revealed to you.

As the answer for #??? no doubt spoiled, the theme of this quiz is GaMetal remixes. Yup, I like listening to GaMetal. Every single song in this quiz is involved in a GaMetal remix (and a full-fledged one, too, not an acoustic short)! Even the song for #??? technically fit this theme, as it's a remix of the earlier 2010 GaMetal version. No, the 2010 version does not use #???'s melody.
I'm surprised how much the 2010 version sounds like it's remixing the Kirby's Return to Dream Land version, even though it was released before that game was.
Yeah, the 2010 version is the song that introduced me to GaMetal, and other works of his such as his remix of the Silver Surfer theme got me hooked.

Shame that person didn't use the theme to get any of the obscure songs correct.

FYI, here are the GaMetal remixes for all the regular melodies in this quiz. Timestamps are from when the song in question starts being remixed:

#10
"Battle! Champion Cynthia"/"Battle! (Champion)", from Pokemon Diamond, Pokemon Pearl, and Pokemon Platinum
Timestamp: 0:13

Either this song is reasonably well-known or daj has been promoting the snot out of it.

One thing's for sure, though: this isn't one of the songs I remember from playing Pokemon Diamond--not even after repeatedly beating Champion Cynthia.

If I had participated, there would be a 60% chance that I would've gotten that one, purely because I recognised it as "Pokemon".
