I would personally notate in the stretto as is and let it clash with the melody a bit. It may not sound great in finale but people who know how to play baroque music would be all like "eyy, stretto, I know how to play that." That's kind of how the original sounds anyways.

I remember suggesting this to you like a millenia ago so I'll assume you already thought about it and would rather leave the polyphony alone (my heart shall ache, but I think I'll live.)

I'm going to have to put on my "NSM Updater" hat for a bit and insist for some closer attention to the source material. Some crucial elements missing:

*The V>I figuration of the timpani generally throughout. It doesn't just drone the tonic.
*Chord changes at m. 9 and m. 10 (DbM7 and Eb, respectively)
*Missing internal 3rd voice between octaves in m. 13-20.

I'm normally a fan of your interpretation of pieces, but in this case, these are detrimental to the music, not enhancements. Maybe it's because this is an old piece? Gosh, I miss you Don : (

UPDATE (12/8/2016): Made new version with changes, and added to OP.
