Hi I have a question:

If I'm notating a song in 12/8 and there is a part with 3 quarter notes (not punctuated) in a row (the first one starting on the first beat). Should I notate it as a quarter triplet or as quarter 8th-tied-8th quarter, or just 3 quarter notes??

Same with 6/8, should I notate 3 quarter notes as a triplet or as quarter 8th-tied-8th quarter, or just 3 quarter notes??

OK, if I'm understanding correctly, you need to notate it like this;

Remember that 12/8, 6/8 and 9/8 is just dividing each beat into three quaver (or quarter-note) pulses, so you need to show each where each pulse is. Hope this helped.

I have seen it done before as just 3 quarter notes but if you're going to do it properly and by-the-book then you'll need to do that middle option you mentioned. The one I didn't strikeout. This one:

Same as the 12/8; just half a measure's worth.
