I just looked it up and apparently the real name for it is purple mangosteen.

Blackberries, watermelons, and pears, I'd say. Pineapples are good as well.

Considering that the Durin Berry is both Bitter and Sour... I'd have to take a guess and say that their real-world inspiration does not taste very sweet. Then again, I found this quote on the Wikipedia article:

Anthony Bourdain, a lover of durian, relates his encounter with the fruit thus: "Its taste can only be described as...indescribable, something you will either love or despise. ...Your breath will smell as if you'd been French-kissing your dead grandmother."

I think grapes, mandarins and mangoes are my personal favourites.

Durian is only good as a "Durian-Flavoured Sponge Cake". Otherwise it's kinda eh.

I used to like dragon fruit, but I haven't had it in a long time, so I don't know what I think of it now.
