So apparently I have a close friend who's a Layton and Ace Attorney fan, and she has an older brother that teaches middle school math. He makes his students solve a Layton puzzle at the beginning of every period.

If anyone cares the Layton I played and didn't like was Last Specter.

People say that it's the worst Layton so that might mean something.

I liked the Last Specter as well,
I am not really sure what is to dislike.

Well firstly he didn't play the whole thing. But aside from that, while Last Specter's setting is probably the loveliest, prettiest of the games and the gameplay is the most polished of all the Nintendo DS titles, its plot is lacking in terms of realism and development, seeming more like a simple fairy tale than a complex mystery.

Seriously, some parts of the plot had me a bit annoyed:

It's one thing to slip Luke's talking to animals in as an inside joke, but it's quite another to have it be a major plot point. I found it a bit too ridiculous, even for this series. While the plot was gripping, its conclusion (save for the death of Loosha) just wasn't as satisfying as previous (and later) installments. I think the game's best moment didn't come until the introduction of Descole, which was just great. Up to that, it was Laytonesque without being very complicated.
