Personally I think it's kinda obvious, let me make a list

Classic games: Tie
Modern games: Mario
Music: Mario (Sonic really havn't changed style of the music. Either it's like the classicgames with up-tempo electronic songs, or it's mix between rock/pop in the later games)
Movies/anime/tv: Sonic (No doubt, Mario really havn't done much there)
Spin-off's: Mario
Clipscenes: Sonic (they are epic in the newer games)
Overall: Mario

Well, he is the most famous videogame character and the mainfigure when talking about videogames
I also simply think that Mario is better Includes Super Smash Bros
