I have a Gyarados that knows surf, whirlpool, and waterfall. I guess water HMs aren't entirely useless!

When you give a Gyarados three water moves, two of them special, they kind of are useless.

^That is, unless you use it just for getting around, a HM slave if you wish.

Though, doing that with a Gyarados would be a bit like buying a large house in a luxurious neighbourhood, empty it and use it to store car parts. Or rebuilding a luxury yacht so you can go trawl fishing with it.

I usually just catch a Lickitung and teach it Cut, Rock Smash, strength and whirlpool, so that I don't have to use the bad HMs
on my better pokemon.
