It's like an unofficial holiday for high school seniors, but I doubt all schools let it slide. I also doubt that it's only American. You might just go to a school that doesn't allow it, so over the years people stopped doing it there.

I looked it up. According to Wikipedia, it is an American thing. It is also called ditch day and cut day.

when It was Ditch day here but my math teacher scheduled the final during my junior year so that all the seniors in my class couldn't skip
