Here's an easy way to understand it. It's exactly like 4/4, except instead of two eighths per beat, there are three. So instead of:

1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8

It's

1-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8-9, 10-11-12

1-2-3, 2-2-3, 3-2-3, 4-2-3. If you're a fan of subdivisions.
