Tbh I found it easier to understand his work, especially serialism and the twelve-tone technique. Not sure why it is always the bane of every theory class' existence (even coming from the instructors).

My teacher always seems over enthusiastic like they want us to like Schoenberg or else. I personally don't understand why you would want to limit yourself to a tone row, probably because I'm not very skilful at writing with them, everything seems to sound... unsubstantial.

It's so not like that. It's just very cool very great interesting things being done with music. I think compositionally oriented people probably "get it" more.
