Because they've usually been written by experts in the field, with credible evidence and proof that these things are true.
That said, if a textbook turns out to be wrong, I'm happy to change it if we can get the 100% unbiased truth in its place.

sarcasm is commonly used without punctuation like this so you should probably start punctuating shit you really mean to say

So, I'm a somewhat scrawny guy. For the longest time I've been around 120 lbs. and haven't weighed myself in quite a while as that's consistently what I come up as. But for the past few months I've done little more than eat a lot of the food in my house and sit on the couch in my room and goof around on my laptop for, oh, a good 6+ hours daily. I hardly exercise or stay active beyond walking to and from classes at the community college I go to and I'm nowhere near in shape in any sense of the word.

So today, after dinner, I decide to weigh myself again and see the extent of the damage I've done to myself. Surely I've put on a few pounds. Surely I'm getting flabby after all this inactivity. I need to prepare myself for the inevitable scheduled exercise that I will put upon myself. I step on the scale, reminding myself that I may weigh a pound or two more than my average weight because I just ate.
