What's the difference between a plain and shiny pokemon?

omega

HOW CAN YOU ASK THAT!!! THEY'RE SHINY!!! WHAT MORE CAN YOU HOPE FOR!!!!!

*AHEM* sorry about that I had to use caps though.

And actually I have no idea.
The odds of there being a bomb on a plane are a million to one. The odds of there being two bombs on a plane are a million times a million to one. So next time you fly, cut the odds and bring a bomb.

A shiny Pokémon is a Pokémon you can encounter in wild and which is shiny (duh) and has another colo(u)r. As far as I know, it doesn't boost your stats but it's just really cool to have one. A friend of mine's got a shiny Oddish. But it still sucks as all Oddishes do :P

And the rate of encountering a shiny is 1/8.192.

I believe a shiny pokemon can be taught moves of another type. (My chimecho was red and could learn fire-type moves)

Cobraroll

^Ingus, you're entirely off the track here, sorry to say.

There is NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER, except from in generation II, where Shiny Pokémon only were able to have Hidden Power [Grass] or [Dragon], due to the coding with the game. This was later fixed in Gen III (completely different coding, which also explains the lack of compatibility between generations).

Yes, I'm still around from time to time. For quicker response, you can reach me by PM, or drop by Smogon to say hi. I go by "Codraroll" there, because of a bet.

Cobraroll, official pokemon authority of the forums, strikes again!

Then why could my Chimecho use Flamethrower?

Cobraroll

I don't know what game you may have done this in, but it's certainly not the official Pokémon Ruby. I'm not slating you for saying this, I actually find it quite interesting.

Look at Chimecho's Artwork here:
http://archives.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Category:Chimecho
It's Gen. III sprite:
http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-rs/358.shtml

No red. A shiny Chimecho is green, any other sprites would have been put on there.

Then you have its learnset:
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Chimecho_(Pok%C3%A9mon)/Generation_III_learnset#By_leveling_up

Data taken straight from the game. No flametrower in there.

Could you provide us with more info, please? This is interesting...

I caught it on Mt. Pyre, in the grass nearest the top. Flamethrower wasn't the only weird move it knew; I taught it Giga Drain too.

Come to think of it, it could have been green, for all I know. It's embaressing to admit, but I'm colorblind, and I usually can't tell red from green....
I feel stupid...

Anyway, the grass type move and the green color seem normal, but why could it learn Flamethrower? Maybe it was some kinda glitch or defect or something.
