Mafia is identical to TWG. I don't know why we'd need both.

You could always try to host a game that's more Mafia-"oriented," like have the wolves be called Mafia, have there be doctors, and a sheriff, etc. Overall though it's just a change of names, not mechanics.

What spitllama says is correct.  If you would like to make a few minor mechanic changes (such as the ability to no lynch and leave wills, for example) which, while in play, keep the game balanced, then by all means, do so.

Quote from: Spyro on May 28, 2012, 09:37:18 AMIf I wanted to host a Mafia game, would I post it here, or in the forum games section? Mafia is similar to werewolf, not sure if anyone has played it. I play it on another forum I'm on.

Yo! Spyro! (love the name, by the way) you should totes join the next TWG (cuz I might be hosting)

Thanks! I do plan on joining some soon, since I am a huge mafia fan.

Yeah I've played with more roles and such.

Just a general question: in a standard TWG, is a herring supposed to know who he/she is?

Mashi

Generally, no, he/she does not know his Role.  If you want to make an exception and inform the Herring of his/her Role, then you may do so, but it would probably be redundant to have a random alliance member with no power.

Spyro

So, if I do host one in the future, do I have to keep following the numbers, or does it really matter?

Mashi

Yes, you would follow the numbers because numbers are super coll.

Gotcha, thanks. I'll sign up for some soon

EDIT: So are there any games open for sign ups? An does one game run at a time?

Yes, one game runs at a time. Whenever it's finished you can sign up for the next one.

[davy]'s in a way different time zone so basically he pops in at like 2 AM and posts 500 words and wins the game

Mashi

Also, Spyro, although I would hate to hinder you, I request that you at least play one game before hosting so that I may gauge your performance.

And as davy said, after the current game (TWG XXXIII: Beat Those Eggs Jimmy!) finishes, a Host Sign Ups topic will be created and, once a Host is selected, the Host will create the game's Player Sign Ups topic where you may join the game.

Yeah I will play a bunch before.

And OK, thanks, I'll wait for the next game then!

So, I got a couple of questions I want some people to explain in depth.

1. If you were hosting do you HAVE to use the phantoms? Is it like, a required thing? I mean, it seems a little pushy that you're forcing them to vote.

2. At the end of the phases for deaths, shouldn't the role be revealed? That's how I've always done it. Shouldn't you get to know who your lynch was? If I ever hosted it, would it matter if I revealed the role or not?

3. Safety. Do I have to use this? Another thing with the phantoms, which I don't really get.

4. A general question, but why are there so many normal humans? In each game I usually am seeing like 2 or 3 special roles.

If you could answer these questions, it would be appreciated.

1. I've never seen a game played without phantoms. The point of phantoms is to force people to be active and vote. I have seen a game with a "no lynch" option, but only because there was a fool in the game. Almost always, "no lynch" isn't an option and phantoms are used.

2. Revealing a players role upon death is called "card flipping" in twg-lingo and is an optional mechanic that the host can choose whether or not to use. If you want to use card flipping, you have to make sure you tell everyone in the host sign-up thread.

3. A safety is a vote for when you do not know whom to lynch, but don't want a phantom. So if I say "safety on Spyro", it is not because I think you're a wolf, but just because I want to avoid a phantom. Generally, I don't really like safetying because it usually means you're not looking hard enough for the wolves, but it can be used.

4. Games with lots of special roles often rely more on the powers of the special roles to find the wolves and less on actually finding the wolves through reading between the lines and looking for inconsistencies in someone's argument, which is what twg is really all about. That being said, there have been a lot of games with almost all special roles, such as TWG XXXI.
