In this case-



The 3rd beat in the RH isn't apparent, but it'd also look dumb to split that eighth note into two tied 16th notes. Should I leave it as is or split it?

Actually, instead of splitting it, why not just write that last eight note as a single 16th? Would shortening it really affect the feel, honestly?

Bespinben's right.
If possible, shorten that eighth down to a sixteenth. But if it really affects the way the song is supposed to sound, then you have to do one of two things:

1) Like you said, tie both sixteenths,

               OR

2) Tie the first sixteenth and make the second sixteenth an eighth. That would eliminate that sixteenth rest sitting there by itself.

But like I said before, whatever fits the original the best is what you go with.
