Merge Layers?

How do I merge layers? Like, make a half note in a different layer but not have the half rest annoyingly there.

you could hide the half rest by highlighting it in simple entry and pressing h.

I've seen this "merging layers" thing quite a lot in church hymn books. The parts will be written as one layer and then, for just a moment, the layers split into two for a moving bass part, and then come back together on the next beat. I think one can acheive this by using a combination of stem direction changing (highlighting a note and pressing "l") and hiding rests in the second layer.
