What happened on 03/17 to have MORE new users than people online, and to have 10x more people online the following day than the rest of the month?

I vividly remember this day, actually. I happened to check the Who's Online page and there was a huge amount of pages for some reason. I don't think any of us ever figured out why there were so many people online.
