INVITATION TO THE MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP (SEASON 11)

Ahoy there! :)

I'm very excited to invite your community to participate in Season 11 of the Mafia Championship.

The Mafia Championship is an annual forum-based tournament series that pits representatives from various online Mafia (aka Werewolf) communities against one another as they compete to determine the Internet's greatest forum Mafia players. Each participating community democratically elects one person to represent them and be their "Champion".

The tournament first started back in 2013. Since then, 380+ different communities and 50+ different nationalities have been represented.

It's a super fun event that has created many new friendships and close bonds between communities. I hope that you would be interested in taking part :)

1. DO YOU ACCEPT THE INVITATION?

If your community wishes to participate, please confirm your participation to Lissa or Arapocalypse as soon as you can to ensure yourselves a spot. Currently, the plan is to accommodate 120 communities this season. If there is further interest, additional communities may sign up as substitutes; generally there are some replacements needed both before and during games.

If your community agrees to participate, the deadline for selecting your representative is April 20th, but the sooner the better.

The games will take place on Mafia Universe. If it's okay, I can link directly to the general discussion thread regarding this topic on Mafia Universe.

Important notes
  • You may decide yourselves how you want to elect your representative, but we highly recommend some sort of democratic process (public nominations followed by a poll usually works out well).
  • In addition to electing a representative, you should also name an alternate who will be asked to step in if the first choice needs to back out.
  • Your representative should be prepared for having to read upwards of 600-700 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. Additionally, there's a requirement that each player must make at least 10 posts per Game Day. Only active players should apply/participate. I repeat: Your chosen player needs to be able to promise a good amount of activity on a daily basis!
2. SEASON 11 FORMAT

The tournament structure
  • 120 communities will participate, each sending one representative.
  • QUALIFIERS: 8 Qualifier Games will be played, consisting of 15 players each. I.e. every representative plays in one Qualifier Game. The players themselves vote post-game to determine who is deserving of advancement. 1st and 2nd place will advance to the Semifinal Games.
  • SEMIFINALS: A Jury consisting of finalists from Season 8 will select 27 additional players to advance to the three Semifinal Games. From each game, five players will advance to the Finale Game based on a post-game player vote, just like in the qualifying phase.
  • THE FINALE: The Finale Game is played. Once it has completed, the winning team will receive the title of Season 11 Champions and a winner's certificate signed by Dmitry Davidoff, the creator of mafia. Players will also vote for additional awards including Best Team Player and Best Sportsmanship.
The qualifier games will be played using the Matrix Mayhem 5x5 setup (see below for more details), and the semifinal/finale games will be played using a different setup(s). The semifinal/finale setup(s) will be finalized around the end of June, for which the candidate setups are detailed here.

This year's qualifier setup: Matrix Mayhem 5x5
(table code isn't working for some reason so see attached image for setup)

The setup is determined by randomly selecting one row or column from the above matrix, and then adding 9 Vanilla Townies and 1 Mafia Goon. This will always result in 12 Town members (3 of which are Power Roles) and 3 Mafia members (1 or 2 of which are Power Roles).

  • For example, if Column A was randomly selected, the setup would be a Town 3-shot Tracker, Town JOAT, Town Odd Night Doctor, 9 Vanilla Townies, Mafia 2-shot Watcher, Mafia Roleblocker, and Mafia Goon.

Mafia flips will only reveal the alignment of the Mafia player, whereas Town flips will reveal the full role of the Town player.
The following roles are non-consecutive (cannot target the same player 2 nights in a row): Town 3-shot Roleblocker and Town Inventor (1x Track, 1x Roleblock).

Each of the Town JOAT's abilities may only be used once throughout the game.

Some alterations may be made to this setup before qualifiers start, but they will be minor if any.

Relevant mechanics info
- Day start.
- Majority elimination will not be enabled during day 1 and is not required at any point for the elimination. Starting on Day 2 and until MYLO/LYLO, majority will be enabled at 12 hours after SoD (in 36/12s and 48/24s) OR at 24 hours after SoD (in 72/24s). MYLO/LYLOs are exceptions, during which majority will be enabled immediately.
- Tied votes will result in a player being eliminated at random from among the tied players.
- No outside communication. I.e. you may not contact the other players outside of the thread (unless you are Mafia and wish to speak with your teammates).
- Phase Lengths and Deadlines will be up to the players themselves (I'll organize your representative into a game with deadlines that suit their preferences).
- Thread is locked during Night Phases.
- Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO.
- Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction. The mafia faction kill is mandatory.
- Mafia may communicate at any time.
- Each individual player may make a maximum of 125 posts per day phase (this restriction is lifted 1 hour before day end).
- The game will have a host to oversee everything and make sure everyone's following the code of conduct, but otherwise the game is completely automated (automatic votecounts, thread locks and reveals alignments automatically, the bot receives and processes actions, etc.).

3. SEASON 11 TIMELINE

There will be 8 Qualifier Games, and your representative plays in just one of these. They will have start dates ranging from the end of April to mid-June. So in other words, as long as your representative can play sometime during that period, they should be good and I'll make sure they get scheduled into a game that suits their schedule well. I.e. if your rep is busy until June, that isn't a problem.

The Semifinal Games will be played in July/August, and the Finale Game sometime in August/September (whenever we can work out something that suits everyone).

If you want to get in contact with us ASAP, you can reach us on Discord at lissa2 (Lissa#8083) or Arapocalypse (Arapocalypse#0834).

Kind regards,
Lissa

Similar to how we did things last time we participated, we'll select our nominee by having players sign up (just by saying "In"), then having the community as a whole vote for who they want to be our representative. Once we have enough people signed up (around 2 or 3, perhaps) and it appears that nobody else wants to sign up, we'll run a poll which will last for about a week. The poll's winner will be our representative, and whoever placed second will be the backup if they so choose. In case of a tie, we will hold a tiebreaker poll between the members who tied, with the loser of the tiebreaker being the backup.

Representative Sign-ups:
1. Oricorio

Because of the deadline for deciding a rep, I'm gonna put the cutoff for sign-ups at March 31st (meaning any poll would go up on April 1st).

It would appear that I am uncontested as the NSM rep. Does anybody want to be the backup?

BlackDragonSlayer

If nobody else wants to be backup I'll be the backup. I'll send the info off by end of day if nobody else says anything.

Congrats to Oricorio coming 4th in the voting for champs !! Looked like really tight voting missed it by just a few points

Hopefully get through to semis as a wild card !!

How did you think the game went? Is it your first time playing champs

In hindsight, I was definitely a bit too static D1, which was likely due to me being unsure of how to handle the post limit and my perspective being skewed by a relatively recent FoL game I played where town's chances of winning were jeopardized D1 because a bunch of townies decided to switch from a correct wagon on a wolf to a wagon on the town Vig at the last minute, which is why I didn't switch my vote D1 when I really should've. I also regret not pushing cows harder D1, as I was onto them before pretty much anyone else so that was a missed opportunity. However, I definitely got more used to things D2 and my play was a lot more fluid, and I think the results speak for themselves. Plus, it was definitely cool to cast the game-ending hammer. I think my strong point was that I played a strong social game as always: I was only voted once the entire game, so I was never in any danger of being lynched, I kept town organized during some of the more chaotic moments, and I locked in the game-winning PoE. Many more people are expected to advance from this game since we were able to secure the win much more quickly than the previous two towns and there were strong players who didn't even podium like Gomes, so we probably don't have to worry too much on that front, although time will tell how the other games go. And on the bright side, at least this game wasn't infiltrated by a four-person hydra that got mislynched D1

Yeah, it's my first time in champs. I wanted to play for a while, but was kept out by a combination of spreading myself too thin (in that I was playing on a lot of sites, but not enough on any single site to be in contention), having to take a couple hiatuses due to schooling and mental health, and being permabanned twice from Bulbagarden for silly reasons, the second time being a year when I had a legitimate chance at being the site's representative (suffice it to say that one of the admins there just doesn't like me for personal reasons). But yeah, I was definitely happy to go, and it was also cool to see NSM back in the tournament after being absent for four seasons! Who knows, maybe BDS will get the chance to sub in this season as well, and I hope to see some of you trying it out in future seasons!

Oricorio

So, I advanced to semifinals! I believe that makes me the first NSM representative to advance, although to be fair I'm the only NSM rep after they switched to the current system and I believe Toby made wildcards for LLF. Scheduling is just starting now, but my next game should start sometime within the next five weeks, so wish me luck!

Congrats !! Big achievement !!

LLF and NSM players have had a lot of cross over so I can't remember who represented who but I was a wild card for semis and got pulled in on a later phase but I'm sure Mashi made it straight through to semi finals. Not sure if that was NSM or LLF though.

Goodluck Oricorio, bring us a win !!
