Keep in mind that the graphics render for TP was actually the WW render, just modified. For SS, it's like they went halfway.
And also, SS is rumored (emphasis on rumored) to be released this fall, but Nintendo probably won't say anything until E3.

I use a program called MuseScore for composition, and it doesn't support (or make) .mus files. Can I still use it?

Try MuseScore. Free and easy (if you know what you're doing; I struggled with it to start).
