So what do u guys think the best mario game is ever?
There are so many Mario games out there, so it would be way too presuming to elect one out of them as best... but Super Mario 64 was groundbreaking and absolutely amazing. I wouldn't say it's the best, but it's up there.
There are a lot of very good Mario games. For example, 3D Land was a very good Mario game. However, the most memorable ones are probably what I would call the "best". From what I've played, Super Mario Galaxy/Super Mario Galaxy 2 are the best, mostly because they're dissimilar enough from the base mechanics to be an original game, but similar enough to be considered a classic Mario game.
Sidescrolling - New Super Mario Bros.
3D Mario - either Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy 2
RPG - Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story
Puzzle - Mario vs Donkey Kong March of the Minis (or whatever the DSiWare game is called)
Super Mario Galaxy is overrated IMO. I personally like New Super Mario Bros Wii., Bowser's Inside Story, PM:TTYD, and Super Mario RPG.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Never played it but it has the best athletic theme
Oh, your poor childhood...
Super Mario World.
As for RPGs, M&L: SS and PM: TTYD.
Sidescrolling - Mari0 Portal New Super Mario Bros. Wii, 'cause it had some epic multiplayer
3D Mario - Super Mario Galaxy 1 or 2, it took me awhile to enjoy SMG2 more
RPG - Paper Mario 64
Spinoff - Mario Tennis GB, tight controls and it actually got a really nice story where you didn't play as Mario ;D
that's tough. lol
If SSBB was just a mario game...i would think that is the best mario game.
But in terms of story mode, gameplay, controls (basically...overall) super mario galaxy 1 or 2 and maybe super mario 64
I really enjoy the Galaxy games more than any of them - mostly because they're the first Mario games I completed 100 percent. XD But they don't give me the same agony 64 did, god damn 100 coins...
I think I still have to get the 100 coins in the lava level in the basement. So annoying.
Oh GOD, that level took me ages. I once went into the volcano too early and ended up with 95 coins. Tears were nearly shed.
If you want pain - Shifting Sand Land, Rainbow Ride, Tick Tock Clock, Dire Dire Docks... 100 coins in them all are horrid.
I think I have 3 stars left to get. I know one of them is the volcano 100 coins, but I can't remember the other two. All of those you mentioned except fore Dire Dire Docks were freaking impossible.
I might check my stars.
EDIT: Okay, yeah. It's been a while. I have 5 stars left.
Lethal Lava Land: 23 coins
Shifting Sand Land: 66 coins
Tiny-Huge Island: 38 coins
Tick Tock Clock: 23 coins
Rainbow Ride: 35 coins
10 stars left. 2 more secret stars, 100 coins in Dire Dire Docks, Rainbow Ride, Tick Tock Clock, and 4 stars in Tiny-Huge Island and one star in Shifting Sand Land.
100 coins in Tick Tock Clock is not fuuun
It's not fun in Rainbow Ride either. I had 71 coins and was having a good run and it glitched on me when I jumped and I died. ;_;
I was the only one who liked tick tock clock XD
Also worst levels: Red Coins in shifting sand land, and the five secret rings in Bob-omb Battlefield.
FUUUUUUUUUUUU
GOD THOSE RINGS IT TOOK AGES TO FLY THROUGH THEM
also, the flying controls. they are terrible. they always will be terrible.
I liked Tick-Tock too! I think that was clever stage idea.
Tick Tock was fun. I remember entering the painting at the wrong time and stopping it when it needed to move. And it was so far uppp!!!! (If you enter it while the hands are at certain positions it affects how quickly the parts move.)
I just remember being so nervous my hands would have a horrible grip on the controller and I'd die a lot >_> The 100 coin star is going to be terrible...
*gets 99 coins, sees final coin, walks toward it*
*PUSHED OFF THE EDGE BY A GIANT FREAKING CLOCK HAND*
*found three days later crying; huddled in corner*
I went it when time was frozen. I'm hoping that's the best way to do it. >_>
I suck at Super Mario 64. I beat the first Bowser though!

I'm pretty sure there's a point where progressing relies on the movement of the clock. That or there are infinitely more wall jumps to get past things.
Then I'll need time to be slowed down. Getting Stomp on the Thwomp nearly gave me a heart attack with how precise every jump had to be... god, when I got the star I was so happy.
Mario 64 gives me a lot of feelings. Most of them are negative.
It was my first video game, so it's a lot of nostalgia for me. My uncle and I would play through levels together.
Oh don't get me wrong, there's levels in there I love. But once you get out of the basement (which doesn't have the best levels but they're not horrid) it's just a journey to hell.
Though, admittedly, Wet-Dry World is one of my favorite levels.
I've always been partial to the second level and Dire Dire Docks. I remember that secret star in the Dire Dire Docks room used to scare the heck out of me as a kid. I was so afraid Mario would drown.
You mean Jolly Roger Bay, right?
The portrait on Lethal Lava Land scared the crap out of me as a kid, too.
And Big Boos Haunt gives me a lot more chills than it should... the basement music...

I love the town section of that world.

You're the third or fourth person I know of who was terrified of Dire Dire Docks. One of them is Aivi Tran, if that means anything to you.

I loved getting the crap scared out of me by the piano. Best moment in a game ever.
Oh god, the piano.
Also, the eel in Jolly Roger Bay scares me too. Doesn't help when I was trying to lure it out to get the star, it just leapt out and killed me.
Either I got the name wrong, there's a naming difference in different versions, or I was influenced by the theme.
@Slow It wasn't inside the painting, it was that hole you could backflip into to collect the red coins. I was fine with the actual level.
^That's Jolly Roger Bay, Dire Dire Docks is that submarine level before Bowser's fire battle

OH YES
Speaking of Bowser levels, I died a few times getting the red coins in the fire world. I haven't done the sky one yet. It's gonna be my last power star.
It's weird, I think the Fire one is harder than the Sky one.
And yeahhhh I think the DS version may be one of my favorite games of all time.
