Title: What 3DS games do you recommend?
Post by: jxjxjx on March 29, 2012, 02:50:35 AM
I created this poll to see what games I should buy on the 3DS. I just can't decide!  :( :-\

Oh ,by the way, I already have a Mariokart 7 game, if you really want to know.

Well I understood, but no one has played KH either because it was just released in Japan.

Eh Kingdom Hearts is so iffy. The story is great, but the gameplay is so boring -_- hacking and slashing is just ehhhh so repetitive. There's hardly any strategy to it, and the little strategy there is is so annoying to try to figure out when really you just want to beat this goddamn boss already.

Super Mario 3D Land is my favorite of the games I have, though I'd also recommend Cave Story 3D if you enjoyed the original. Most people liked Mario Kart 7 the best but I personally loved Super Mario 3D Land more.

At home I was able to read a Nintendo Power, and it said one of the changes KH developers are working on is to remove the repetitive hacking at enemies. Idk what it'll amount to, but yah.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm in it more now for the story than anything else. I just have to finish Coded and then I'm caught up with the story because that supposedly has a major influence in this upcoming one.

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

Sequel to 999, which was an amazing game. I highly suggest you check out 999 for DS just to get an idea of what this new one will be like.

Title: Re: What 3DS games do you recommend?

Unless you buy it used or online I doubt it will drop in price anytime soon.
Title: Re: What 3DS games do you recommend?
Post by: SlowPokemon on April 23, 2012, 04:20:25 AM
Yeah you'll probably have to get it used if you want it at a cheaper price (and really for four or five dollars it's probably just as worth it to buy it new). Amazon's price is a couple dollars cheaper than the list price right now, at $37.99 rather than $39.99, so if you get free shipping I'd recommend buying it there. It's true that some games decline in price over time, but I think that since it's a Mario title, and 7/8-year old games from the same series, like New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 64 DS, are still pretty near their original list prices, there's not much chance it'll go down anytime soon.
Title: Re: What 3DS games do you recommend?
Post by: fabbemannen on April 23, 2012, 06:59:37 AM
I only got 3D Land, OoT3D and MK7 (and 4 swords, but I don't count that, you can't buy it now anyhow)

I got a little disappointed in both 3DL and MK7. Both are really good games, but it's not what I was expecting. 3D Land even made me bored, it just didn't feel as funny as SMG1/2 which it obviously got the same type of gameplay as. I also felt that there was basically the same power-ups the whole game, the fireflower and the Tanooki-leaf (Boomerang-suit once in awhile too)

MK7 is a really great game though, but I feel it's lacking stuff. They could have done way more with the game, which they didn't. You can't even select a track to race on without choosing a GP in singleplayer, and the Tanooki-leaf is probably the worst item so far in the MK-series (I'm normally in front, and there's basically no defense from it, unless you wanna spam the button and get thrown into every single wall when a turn comes + it lasts way too long when I want an useful item instead)

OoT3D is solid ofc, what you expect it to be from the original, but better.

Else, I would probably recommend Cave Story 3D (I know it's good without even playing that version, the original was so epic) and maybe Kid Icarus. People seem to enjoy it a lot (I wanna test it, I'm not a shoot 'em up-fan really, but the land-stages and multiplayer looks fun)

I can't give recommendations of games that aren't out yet. Even though a lot of great games are coming out soon

There.

3DS is definitely worth it. Get the XL, btw, it's much better and worth the extra cash.

My favorite games are Virtue's Last Reward and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, but if you're not into text-heavy or story-focused games, get Luigi's Mansion 2. It's really really addictive and a great game overall.
Title: Re: What 3DS games do you recommend?

BTW, I can't recommend PMD. I had fun with it, but it's nowhere near as good as the other ones.

Since X and Y are in October, yeah I'd say its worth it.

I havent played much :P
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Gates to Infinity
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (if you've payed the ones before it)

Theres a lot more and honestly this list doesn't look too good. Pokemon Rumble Blast is..ok, but I could honestly have gone without it

Ninja'd: Noo PMD was great :/
Title: Re: What 3DS games do you recommend?
Post by: SlowPokemon on May 24, 2013, 09:22:56 AM
Rumble Blast is terrible if it's anything like the Wiiware version.

Luigi's mansion is great. And BTW you don't need to have played the previous Laytons to enjoy Miracle Mask (though you'd probably enjoy it more).

I can't recommend 999 and Virtue's Last Reward highly enough, though.

Title: Re: What 3DS games do you recommend?

I guess I'll take this one.

SpotPass: content that will be downloaded to your system through the Internet. i.e., Nintendo's notifications about updates or upcoming titles, and official Nintendo Swapnotes, will be sent through SpotPass.

StreetPass: content that you can share/experience by having your 3DS system on sleep while passing another person with a 3DS on sleep. So, if I have my system asleep while at school, and I pass by Blue, whose system is also sleeping in his backpack, the two will find each other and Blue's Mii will show up in my StreetPass Plaza (and vice-versa).

And certain games make use of StreetPass as well; for instance, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. If you put a Reviver Seed in the Passerby Post, and you connect with StreetPass to someone else with the game, you can give them a Reviver Seed for their game. Neat, huh?

About Streetpass, I think it changed from the beginning. I know my 3ds (the zelda oot bundle one) needs to be in sleep mode in order to connect with someone, but my cousin had a 3DSXL and he didn't have to close his. I think the first batch or so had that feature but they realized how inconvenient it was so they changed it.

Title: Re: What 3DS games do you recommend?

If you've never played Ocarina of Time, go for Ocarina of Time 3D. If you've played the Nintendo 64 version (or the ports for GameCube or Wii) then you already know what to expect. Ocarina of Time is only worth getting if you never played the original, or are a super huge fan of the original and can't wait to see the updated graphics (and I'll admit it, the game looks beautiful).

I have never played Kid Icarus Uprising, but it's really popular and has great reviews so I would say it looks pretty good.

This is my library, and are the games I can vouch for:

nintendogs+cats:  Meh.  Prolly fun for some, but not really my thing.  It'll probably be the pet sim to beat over the lifespan of the 3DS though.

Pilotwings Resort: Surprisingly good for a launch game.  Very relaxing, fun exploration, and challenging missions.  Great game.

Steel Diver: This one is very unique, and its control scheme stands out a lot.  However, it is rather short, and generally doesn't feel like it has enough bang for your buck.  Still, good game.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D: Really?  Do you even need to ask?  It's the best version of what many regard as the best game of all time.  I disagree with Slow, even if you played the original, you owe it to yourself to rediscover this game.  Easily my favorite title thus far. A++++++++++

Star Fox 64 3D: REPLAY VALUE.  This game has lots, and is regarded by most to be the pinnacle of Star Fox gaming.  Great game.

Tetris Axis:  This one is perplexing simply because they could have done so much more with it.  Isn't this kind of the perfect opportunity for a 3D Tetris mode?!?  Most of the other modes don't satisfy for long, either.   But Marathon and Fever (awww yeah) DO NOT disappoint.  And c'mon, it's Tetris.  You can't put it down.

Top three on my want list:
Pokemon Rumble Blast
Super Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7

Don't get it. I have it, and while it looks fun and stuff, it's really tedious and would take A LOT to get into. I'm not even very far, but it's just too much for me to handle. It's the one 3DS game that I regret getting.
Title: Re: What 3DS games do you recommend?
Post by: SlowPokemon on May 28, 2013, 08:54:07 PM
Please don't spend money on Rumble Blast xD it will only encourage the developers to make another one, and it's a pretty terrible game (though I don't have it, I've played a friend's and have the Wii version).

Super Mario 3D Land, while fun, is not the same level as Galaxy or 64. It's just New Super Mario Bros in a 3D world. It's really fun, though, and would be a decent buy. It does get pretty repetitive though. Mario Kart 7 is an updated Mario Kart, with various no-name characters who strangely were included despite their obscurity. It's very fun though, and the best MK yet.

My advice? Get 999 or Virtue's Last Reward. You'll thank me later. If you're unwilling to do so, get Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon. That's the best game for the 3DS that isn't Virtue's Last Reward. After that, my recommendations would be, in this order, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask.

You should visit.
What are you coming to do?
we're on our orchestra trip, which only happens once every four years. We're gonna be in the Denver and Colorado Springs area.

It's pretty good weather right now depending on where you're from. You should send me your performance locations/times. I might be able to see something if it's an option.

Meh.  Not really interested in 999 atm.  I could probably convince my parents to let me play it despite the M rating, but I have so many other things I want to play right now.  Miracle Mask and Dark Moon I will be getting eventually.

Arright Slow.  Why don't you sell it to me.  Sum up everything that is great about it and shoot down negatives.  Gogogo.

Hmmm.....

Arright Slow, I'll make you a deal.  Assuming my parents are okay with me playing it, I will trade off favorite games with you.  If you play through a Zelda game without resorting to a walkthrough, and approach it without bias (cause I know you're kinda prone to do that :P) I will try to play 999 in my spare time this summer.  I think I'll give it a shot.

Options (games I have on my 3DS, I haven't finished any):

Ocarina of Time 3D
Minish Cap
TLOZ
Zelda II

The game I played the most of was Ocarina of Time, I got quite far before getting stuck or distracted and would have to restart

Get the Oracle games! There's a special deal for both for around $10.00

I will be honest, I played that for ten minutes and uninstalled it vowing never to look at it again. Minish Cap looks pretty cool

Of those, I would recommend OoT first and Minish Cap second. Zelda is hard without practice, and Zelda II is ridiculous. If you explore enough and make sure you know exactly what your objective is in OoT, you'll do fine.

At least your save file wasn't corrupted twice after hours of grinding :P
Title: Re: What 3DS games do you recommend?

I've never played Minish Cap (how do you have that on your 3DS??? I want it) but I know it's great.  I would not recommend Zelda II, doesn't give the ultimate experience, and the same with the original to a certain extent.  OoT 3D?  Your call.  It's so legendary I'd assume you know pretty much everything about it anyway :P  So yeah, Minish Cap would be my first choice.  Deal?

Oh, and Blueflower, I'm trucking it to the Great Temple.  O_O  These stupid enemy scenes. SO dumb.

Yeah it's sad, but it's still a great game. Don't let it get to you.

Also you lied to me, Mr. "I'll get OoT3D when I get back from Colorado."

ok people.

give me good reasons to buy PMD. The highest review I've seen so far is a 5. Not impressed.

I'm terrible at making arguments but I have to try

1. It made me cry not only at the end, but multiple times throughout the story just because of how adorable it was. And I don't cry easily im such a liar.
2. Experience is party-wide, so if you leave a Pokemon back at home it gains all the experience that the battling ones in the dungeon do.
3. Umbreon and Espeon are major plot characters (as is Dunsparce)
4. DLC (if you like that kind of stuff)

I honestly don't see why its been getting bad ratings, it wasn't bad at all. I think people just over-glorified it, and then when it came out it didn't live up to their expectations of the great new PMD game in 3D
Title: Re: What 3DS games do you recommend?

PROS:
1. The story is as good as previous Pokemon Mystery Dungeon titles, and while it's in a similar style and some parts do feel familiar, there is still enough novelty to engage you. What's more, the story is a solid 18-20 hour adventure.
2. The dungeon-crawling mechanics have been made slightly smoother and more convenient.
3. The game is challenging without being impossible.
4. The characters are lovable.
5. The music is excellent and high-quality.

CONS:
1. Once you finish the story, there's nothing to do at all. Unlike the previous games, which had multitudes of post-game chapters, there is absolutely nothing to do after finishing the story besides go on missions.
2. The dungeon-crawling gameplay, while it is improved, is still monotonous, tedious, and tiresome. It's simply not very fun after a while, and the only reason you find yourself continuing is to reach the next section of story.
3. Speaking of the story, there is no way to speed up text, making the story sequences drag on much longer than necessary.
4. It's more of a pet peeve than anything, but there are no confirmed genders. Your gender is never asked, but other characters calling you "he" reveals your character is male. Same with your partner. Virizion is referred to as "she," but how would you know she's female other than that? It takes away some of the personability, plus Attract and Captivate now work on every Pokemon.
5. Speaking of Pokemon, there are only 140 or so that exist in the game. The vast majority of these are Unova Pokemon, too.
6. Forgive me, but as much as I like being able to pick my Pokemon, it doesn't feel as intimate as the personality test. Plus, with only five Pokemon, there's a very limited selection.
7. The "Pokemon Paradise" idea never totally worked for me, to be honest. It wasn't fun.
8. Same with the Magnagate. It really wasn't cool.
9. They need more StreetPass features than just getting a Reviver Seed.
10. The DLC is not worth your money, and it feels like a huge cash-in on the company's part.

Overall it's not a bad game, but it's a monstrous step down for the series. So many times I found myself thinking, "this could be great, but it just seems lazy." I felt like I got a demo of a game. Little things like no genders, no personality test, no way to speed up the slow-moving text, and such a ridiculously limited selection of monsters accumulated my annoyance throughout the game, peaking with the absence of any post game. I had a lot of fun throughout the story, but I doubt I'll ever play it again.

My score: 6.5/10 (but leaning toward 6 rather than 7)

If you want a story game (that isn't rated M, because Virtue's Last Reward is the best), get Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask--and no, you don't need to have played the previous installments to have fun with the game.

If not that, go for Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon--definitely worth your money.

If you're set on Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, so be it, but don't be too disappointed with it.

I may buy PMD, but only after I get Animal Crossing. Then I'll seek out 999 and Virtue's Last Reward, if I can find them. (i can buy them anyway, i'm 17)

Good choice. Truth is, if you liked the previous PMD games, this one will be just as engaging. I just think it was held back from excellence by several things, and that it should have been a lot better.

I'm struggling to finish the story of PMD. It's just so...tedious. Also having multiple dungeons with the same Pokemon. Unimpressed.

People I know that have played it plus reviews say it is vastly inferior to previous games, so I wouldn't discount the series. I haven't tried them myself though besides the demo for this one..

I don't own it, but Nintendo Life usually has their head on straight and gave it an 8 out of 10. (http://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/3ds/pokemon_mystery_dungeon_gates_to_infinity)

I'll be getting it eventually.

I've played Red/Blue + Darkness/Time + Demo, and so far the 3DS one is the "worst" of them all.

You could always get the special 3DS XL based on Animal Crossing, or the upcoming one based on Mario & Luigi RPG 4. Those two come loaded with those games.

Kid Icarus: Uprising is a must-have, even if you've never heard of Kid Icarus or don't like it. It's just too awesome to not have. Besides, the multiplayer in it is super fun. Fire Emblem: Awakening is also amazing. Another must-have, only unless you're very bitterly against strategy games. (I don't like them in general, but FE:A is one of the best 3DS games I've ever played.)

Resident Evil: Revelations and Metal Gear Solid 3 are also really cool, if you're into those kinds of games.

Any games I didn't mention either weren't good enough to deserve a mention from me, or suck ass.
