Title: Mario Kart Wii
Post by: musicguy49 on February 23, 2008, 10:14:46 AM
I'm sure a lot of you have heard of this game so here's what we know about it.

The game will come with a racing wheel although you can use the wii remote and the nunchuk, the classic controller and the gc controller. You still have the same difficulty levels such as 50cc (only for karts), 100cc (only for bikes) and 150cc (for both). That's right, a new addition to the game is bikes which are very different from normal karts. Races will feature 12 karts/bikes instead of 8. There are 12 characters right from the beginning : Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Toad, Koopa, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Princess Peach, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, and Bowser. You will also be able to play with you Miis. There are 32 tracks : 16 old ones + 16 new ones.

Of course, online will be a big part of the game. 12 players online (with the possibility of playing online with 2 people on the same console)+ online battles! There may even be a Mario Kart channel in the game but few informations are known about that.
It will be released April 10th in Japan and April 11th in Europe. No dates for North-America.

Post by: blah54 on February 24, 2008, 07:30:53 AM
i hope they make some of the tracks more challenging... mario kart tracks tend to be a little easy, and it would be nice to see some more difficult tracks added...

Title: Re: Mario Kart Wii
Post by: musicguy49 on February 24, 2008, 08:08:16 AM
that's true. Mario Kart Ds was pretty easy. The rainbow track thing in Double Dash was quite difficult though.

LOL I don't know if I've ever completed the Mario Kart Double Dash Rainbow Road (long title) track WITHOUT falling off....ever!

Post by: Shiny Boy on February 24, 2008, 05:30:11 PM
Those screens are just a bad resolution. Pretty common. The graphics will probably be just as good as Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Rainbow Road was my favorite (because everyone else hated it). I've had many perfect runs (i.e. not falling off).
Some of those courses look very cool.

Then why didn't yuo say that the first time and save a post?
Anyways, I'm considering this game. I haven't gotten a console racer in a while...
If I had to pick a track to come back from Double Dash, it would have to be Luigi Circuit. I love that music + pure ownage at that stage = Success!

According to Kotaku.com, the only way we'll be able to communicate online with MK Wii is via text messages. Soooo, that means no voice chat although that was already pretty obvious. I wonder what'll be the first Nintendo voice chat game...

So none of the DS games have voice chat?

I really hope they bring back that battle stage from the first Mario Kart. You know, the one with four large block tower things? Block Fort?

I also hope they make a course that's super-not-linear. Something like Mushroom City only with more variation depending on which path you take.

Lastly I pray they make online decent as oppose to SSBB. Honestly, if they give a game a "T" rating, why do they think that the buyers need to be babied and protected from ALL contact with whon they're fighting?

the voice chat works fone on mph, i did it with some friends and you can chose between voice chat (hold (Y)) or a text message.
and theres only a delay of a quarter of a second

1. yes there are some old courses
2. you can use the wii wheel, the wiimote, wiimote + nunchuck, classic controller and the gamecube controller.
and the wii wheel iz fun it just adds some extra game experience......(".)

The wheel is just another gimmick.  I doubt that it really is any good if you actually want to play the game seriously and be good at it.  Just like the sideways wiimote controls for Smash.

Drifting in this game is awful!! If you liked the DS Mario Kart (and snaking :P) you're going hate drifting in this! Manual drift = jump and slide + wait for blue sparks and wait longer for red sparks.

Some of the new courses are pretty awesome though. Battle mode a huge disappointment.

Heh, funny joke.  Snaking was never meant to be in the game, it is an EXPLOIT.  An exploit is using some sort of flaw or bug in the game  to your advantage, in this case the ability to powerslide multiple times on a straightaway.  Any REAL good player of Mario Kart will tell you that snaking is a low, low method that no real legit player would use.

I'll probably get this game eventually, but now I'm right in the middle (beginning actually) of Tales of Symphonia, as well has having more Brawl stuff to do, and getting 121 Stars in Galaxy. So I'm pretty well booked.
But if there's no drifting (or speedometer)...I might wait for it to come down to $20.

And there is drifting, altho it's different from MKDS because you will get the miniboost after a while of drifting, instead of pressing left right left (or right left right) on your control stick.

The sparks you get from drifting are determined by the speed and angle you make your turn.

The faster you go and the sharper you turn the quicker you will get your blue and red sparks.

When do I need to begin accelerating to get the speed boost at start?

Do they really need to change it in every game..

It's pretty much the same as the ds one, start accelerating just about after the two appears

i know a way to partly dodge a POW block.
when a POW appears (boom, boom, BOOM) 0.5 sec before the third boom, shake you wii wheel/wiimote like a maniac and you will make a 720º degree spin with a blue wave around you, instead of a 1640º spin.

note: do not do this when you are peforming a wheelie

...You've never played any of the previous games?  The items are what makes the game fun!

If you want to play a real, intense competitive racer go play one of the racing sims like Project Gotham Racing, Gran Turismo, or Forza Motorsport.

exactly. it's fun and all, but when someone nails you with a cheap item it just like F**KDAMNYOU!

And of course that comic was titled: "Fucking blue shells"

XD

I love xkcd.

QuoteYou can evade blue shells in Double Dash, but it is deep magic.

EDIT:  Ok, this game is a tad bit annoying.  When just playing 50CC with the Wii Wheel 90% of the items went toward me, completely ignoring any opponents and the fact that they've run into various items along the way.  Also, the graphics in this game are horrendous.  The character models are all blocky, and the Miis on the sidelines are frickin' 2D.  Meh, its still fun, just nowhere near as fun as the older ones.  Also, the tricks rarely work when shaking the wheel.

I'll try it next time I play.

I agree with the items being cheap since they usually all go to you.  For example, i got hit by a blue shell, then a red shell, then another blue shell within like 5 seconds.  Also, I think that the graphics could have been a little better, but they are at the higher end for wii games.  Finally, how dare you say that the trick system is stupid/doesn't work.  It works about 98% of the time for me, and is a great addition, especially on stages like dk summit with the half pipe.

Personally, I think this game is amazing. I like it a lot, and I don't mind the graphics. They're not that bad. I haven't tried the online yet, but I'm sure it will be better than brawl's online from watching some youtube vids. So, what's your favourite course(s)? Mine would have to be either Koopa Cape, or Rainbow road. Sure rainbow road's hard, but it's really fun.

I agree that this game really tries to make winning hard. Three times today I was hit with a blue shell/lightning right before the finish. Once was literally a foot or two in front of the line, causing me to place 3rd. Other than the cheap computers, though, this game is great. I don't think the graphics are bad at all and the trick system has only failed me maybe twice.

After playing this game a ton more, theres only 1 real complaint I have: 12 racers is too many!  With all these people, there are way too many items flying around, including 3x more lighting and blue shells than in the last game, which is INCREDIBLY annoying.  Here's a basic race for me:

In first place
Get hit by a red shell, 2nd place guy coming up behind
Blue shell comes out of nowhere and hits me, I fall back to third
Lightning strikes the second I recover from the blue shell, immensely slowing me down so that it takes me forever to regain my spot at first.

That happened to me a lot in Double Dash too, especially during 150cc. And Mirror Mode, which made it all the more confusing and painful.

The more the merrier.

I like having 12 racers on the track at once, makes things more interesting.

Exactly, except on 150cc instead of the red shell part, a racer from behind will crash into you with a mushroom, star, or other speeding item and you'll psin out into another driver from behind. By the time you get going again, you're in 10th or 11th place.

Quote from: DrHectic on April 16, 2008, 03:21:02 AMDrifting in this game is awful!! If you liked the DS Mario Kart (and snaking :P) you're going hate drifting in this! Manual drift = jump and slide + wait for blue sparks and wait longer for red sparks.

Some of the new courses are pretty awesome though. Battle mode a huge disappointment.
i loved snaking in the DS one and i was really good at it.

now i play mario kart wii and i love it.

so yeah.

This game is fun, but DD was a lot better and seemed to keep me enthrawled for a longer period of time. I do like the game none-the-less and am playing it quite a lot, but i stopped playing the Grand Prix on the Retro Courses on the 150cc. I did one of those challenge things the other day for the first time, i got like 9th in the world at that time, i was pretty proud of myself. I checked back later and was like 11th, but it was better to be all alone towards the front than being in that crowded mass there at the left side of the screen.
