Welcome to NSM and thank you very much for these! You did a great job here so far, but in Walking the Plains some of the very high and low notes look very messy, maybe you should use 8va's and 8vb's for that. ;)

Well... First of all: Hi, and welcome!  :)

You did a nice job with those arrangements! But I agree with Korados, some parts are messy and need octaves! Anyways, nice arrangements; and better than my first ones, trust me...  ;D

These are pretty good! I do have a few specific criticisms, but I'll share those when I can make a closer comparison between your arrangements and the originals. There's nothing really wrong with the arrangements, but there can still be improvements on it.

Also, New Super Mario Bros is a great choice for game music! It's got some pretty interesting, yet underrated tunes. So, thanks for your contributions to that section!

You can read .mus files by downloading Finale Reader here (http://www.finalemusic.com/reader/default.aspx).

Although if you want to be able to edit any sheets, you can download a free 30-day trial of Finale Notepad (http://www.finalemusic.com/NotePad/Demo.aspx).

Title: Re: Greg's Arrangements (NSMB Walking the Plains and World 1 Map)
Post by: Sekter77 on March 14, 2011, 09:39:02 PM
Ok, here's a few of my observations:

For both of your arrangements, there are some parts that could use harmonies. Measures 10 and 14 in your Map arrangement specifically. There are only a few parts (mostly the vocal parts) in "Walking the Plains." They're not really necessary, but it adds a little bit of extra depth to the arrangement.

I think that the synth vocal parts in "Walking the Plains" would probably sound better raised up an octave too.

In Measure 26 (and the other measure like that), the A should come on the 'and' of beat 2 instead of beat 3.

And last, starting from Measure 31, the right hand part of Piano 2 sounds a little off. I recognize the part you were trying to transcribe from the original and I think there's a few notes missing and a couple of incorrect rhythms.

Anyway, these are just suggestions so feel free to disagree with any of them.

I see what you mean... not entirely sure what to do about the percussion though, as it seems to be an integral part of the arrangement.

Not sure what you mean by "synth vocal"... sorry, I'm sort of new to finale  :-\

I'll get around to fixing these sometime... but I'm working on the world 3 map screen, which is problematic because of sound effects  :P

Sorry if I was confusing. I just meant the parts that sounded like a choir (or whatever) in the original song (they're usually G's in your arrangement I think). I just thought that they might sound better an octave higher.
Also, I wouldn't mind fixing the percussion part in Piano 2 if that's ok. I think I got the rhythms picked out, I'd just have to get the pitches figured out.

World 3 map sounds like a good piece for piano too! It's very relaxing. Good luck with it.

Well done!
These sound pretty good!

I have my own "Walking the Plains" here (http://www.ninsheetm.us/smf/index.php?topic=3069.0) if you'd like to see it.
It contains a few more things that yours doesn't, but feel free to add those things to yours.
I already tried submitting it but it got rejected. Hopefully you'll have better luck.

Title: Re: Greg's Arrangements: The Mario Zone (Added Partners in Time Normal Battle)
Post by: Greg on April 02, 2011, 08:28:43 PM
Thanks. Problem with all of these themes is they all require two pianos, and sometimes percussion :-\

I just found this awesome theme... the "Ground/Underground Remix" from Galaxy and Galaxy 2.

Might put them both in one sheet, as they are nearly the same.
Title: Re: Greg's Arrangements: The Mario Zone (Added Partners in Time Normal Battle)
Post by: Sekter77 on April 02, 2011, 10:52:53 PM
Well, they don't really require two pianos. Sometimes one of the parts can be squeezed into a different hand as another voice, or the part isn't prominent enough to be put in the arrangement at all. The fact that you try to include every part shows some real dedication.

Percussion (as far as drums and such go) usually isn't that big of a loss. Most of the time, having the drum part missing won't really matter, especially for piano players. Actually, I don't think I've come across any websites that specialize in video game drum charts. That might be interesting...

By the way, which Galaxy song/songs are you talking about? Could you give a YouTube link or something?
Title: Re: Greg's Arrangements: The Mario Zone (Added Partners in Time Normal Battle)
Post by: Greg on April 03, 2011, 04:00:57 AM
I have a link to a video in the bottom of the first post... it's a compilation of every theme in the Mario series based on the underground theme.

The theme I'm talking about appears at about 6:00 and 9:00. (once for each Galaxy).

Perhaps some parts are unnecessary in some of my pieces, but I just LOVE hearing a completed arrangement that sounds nearly authentic. Maybe that's just me  :P

I could do versions for one piano with just the main parts... but I have other things to do right now  ::)

EDIT: Just found out that the theme is actually the "Cosmic Mario" theme, which should be easy enough to find. I hate writing sound effects :-\

You might change them to low bass notes, in piano reductions of orchestral works the piano player plays very low notes when percussion instruments play. The best example is Gershwin's Piano Concerto, right in the first measures. ;)

So, I've added the 80% finished SMG Main Theme!

I figure that as long as I'm still working on it, I might as well get feedback.

However, Finale's been buggy lately and I can't add expressions.  :-\ So it might be awhile before I actually finish.

Post by: Sekter77 on May 11, 2011, 10:58:10 AM
I can't vouch for the accuracy of your SMG arrangement yet, but I do have some other tips.
A siimple formatting thing to fix is to change the way you notate some of the rhythms. There's a lot of places where you use two dotted quarter notes followed by a regular quarter note. You need to fix the second note by making it an eighth note tied to a quarter note. I know it may seem tedious, but it really helps with readability. Just remember not to cover up any downbeats (Beats 1 and 3).
Also, a lot of things seem kind of unplayable, like the section where you have a whole bunch of 32nd notes in a bass part for a couple measures. I know accuracy is important, but you may want to consider just making them 16th notes instead.

One more suggestion: you may want to consider making some of your arrangements for one player as well. All you'd have to do is just combine parts or drop unnecessary parts so you can fit all the important stuff in two staves. It is allowed to have duets and one player arrangements so you might want to do that for those who either can't or don't want to play a duet.

The point of the 32nds is just to imply "play as fast as possible".

And thanks for the other suggestions. I'll get around to making single piano arrangements once I finish this.

SP, that's what it's called. :P It's pretty much the main motive of sorts. Not sure where it appears in the game though.  :-\

Good to know you're back to arranging!
The NSMB Wii Credits sound nice. Good job.
In the opening measures, you use dotted eighth followed by sixteenth. Unless the opening is that metric while the rest of the song swings, these notes could be noted quarter triplet followed by eighth triplet.
In measure 22, since the quarter notes move down chromatically by half step, it would be better to use Db/Ab. That would give you a smoother, easier line to read of D-Db-C and A-Ab-G. And since the chromatic line in measure 35-36 is moving up by halfstep, it would be better to spell the chromatic pitch with a sharp. Thus the line G-G#-A would appear in piano 1's treble and bass clef.
In measure 52, spell the Eb eighth note as an Eb as well. Then in measure 68,  stick with E natural and G#, but change the eighth note again to Eb and G. This just shows the major thirds occur there. It's possible to notate them as D# in measure 52, then as D# and Fx in measure 68. I kinda like the second one more, since it shows that these chromatic notes move towards the E and G# instead of vice versa. But I suppose it's up to you. Don't need naturals on the second notation though.
For all that I just said, be sure to check when it happens again in the piece. Most of this repeats. It could be nice to have a first and second ending if you can find out where they would go.
The last thing I have to say is that most of the time, one piano's hand goes untouched. Sometimes, this piano has the melody. It is entirely possible to double the melody an octave above or below (whichever fits the situation) or split the melody between the two pianos (in octaves, preferably; unisons on occasion). It'd be ideal to add another line, but if the piece does not have other lines at that point, a doubled melody saves a player's hand from going unplayed.
Keep on arranging. Can't wait to see what else you have in store.

I technically could, but it would probably sound terrible without all the percussion and that particular timbre!

WarioPiano, it seems a bit rude to go on somebody's submission thread and demand that they arrange something.  Greg has a poll you can vote in; vote for NSMBW.  Also, you can message him with a specific request for him if you really want to.  But you should really just save that for the Request board.  If you requested it and nobody took it, you can't force it on somebody.  If you want to learn to arrange something yourself, you could ask around.  A few people just taught Nebbles how to arrange, and her first piece turned out fine.  I'd be willing to give you a few pointers if you want.

The onsite arrangement for this one is a little lacking, so I redid it! It's been quite a long time since I've done anything new so I'd really appreciate criticism of this one.

Pretty dubious playability on this one, but it was fun to arrange. Probably reasonably easy to convert to a playable solo arrangement.

CrossCode is a phenomenal game and all of you should try it out (it's got a demo and everything). It's also got a heck of a soundtrack: honestly, this was one of the least interesting pieces from it but everything else is pretty difficult to arrange!
