That's like GREAT (with capitals!). You can clearly hear the classical influences and it's really cool. Some chords I like are a little off, perhaps the one in measure 4 and 8. But still.

Good work Hansi ;)

And here is where I find Hans writing as Hans. Finally discarding your Beethoven-esque shackles, eh? Glad to hear. (Get it? It's a pun!)

A few comments, from composer to composer, I would've liked to hear some smoother transitions between sections. In all of your music, you tend to clip off sections instead of letting them flow into each other.

Oh, I'm glad to see you're no longer over doubling the strings, but you seemed to have moved on to the other instrument groups.

Wow I didn't expect answers so soon. Thank you so much guys!

@Ruto: haha, of course you are ;).
@Maestro: No I don't get it xD I am sorry^^. But you're right that's one of my biggest problems... I need to work on that! I have to compose more and frequently, I hope that will improve my composing/orchestrating skills.

@U-x: of course it is xD. just kidding! I am glad that you liked it!^^

OMG Dahans, I'm scared the brilliance of your compositions (really just the file size) if going to make my computer blow up!

Whenever I play them in Finale, it skips back a few beats like every 5 seconds, making the scroll bar not line up with the music. The comp froze too, until the song was done playing. The visual bar ended and the song continued for 2 more mins, weird.

Great composition though (dedicated to ruto).

My only critique would be the same as for the other compositions, make the different sections flow together.

I have the same problem though, so no matter.

So how long did a 6 minute orchestra take you to write, anyway?

Enjoy your speed dahans, it won't last. I used to turn out music at a quick rate, but I then started to take greater care in the details of my music and arrangements. That and college really saps your time.

Very nice, I'm still listening through it and it is very good. Love the development in the first movement, especially the triplets. The second movement has a major problem however: the cello part is too low. Cellos can only hit a low C, two ledgers below the staff; and you have it going as low as b-flat. The third movent is very lively, though I do believe the key should be in F, not C. The finale is dahans at his best, very inspired. Over all, very good. Your writing is improving. You have yet to make a noise in this world. Once again, fantastic job.
Title: Re: UPDATE: string quartet :)

I have yet to see it, but if it goes down only to a B-flat, you could just retune the string to fit so >.>

@Maestro: This means a lot to me, thanks^^. Concerning the cello part: I must have forgotten that... But I could fix that by transposing the second movement.

Oh my xD Thank you so much...you really didn't need to, but I enjoyed it :D :D :D *pats head*

I remember last year, on Nov. 18th, I said my birthday was coming up soon, and you asked when it was. I asked you to check the calendar...then you went crazy and said you didn't do anything yet and spent the next 30 minutes composing without telling me!) while I was telling you it was okay, I didn't really like celebrating my birthday and getting old, and then how awful my birthdays usually are. Then we changed the topic and you surprised me with a composition right before you went to bed XD

Like last year, now I'm actually looking forward to my birthday xD...keep up the great work!

Title: Re: Dahans' compositions: UPDATE: Birthday present for RUTO
Post by: Olimar12345 on November 02, 2011, 04:53:26 PM
Alright! Here's what I think: (gonna be completely honest)

-Horns get too high(i wouldn't normally write above one ledger line). Think of the french horn as a trombone and you'll be fine.
-Trumpet parts are REALLY high. sure, it's possible to play the things you wrote, but it wouldn't be practicle in this setting-you can move alot of it down an octave and it will be just as powerful, if not more powerful.
-It could use more trombone in some parts.
-The clarinet is downright too high(I see a trend here)-measures 36 and 37 are great examples. I think you'd be much happier with alot of their stuff down an octave-once you get too high you sort of lose that clarinet sound. (the same is ture with most instruments.)
-Double sharps aren't bad, but I would avoid writing them just for the sake of clarity.
-Some flute parts are actually too low at times-you're flat-out not going to hear them when the rest of the ensamble is playing. I'm not saying that they can't play down there, cus they can(and it actually sound really cool!), I'm just worried about actually hearing them.
-oboe tends to get on the high side at times.
-There's a point where the 2nd violin goes too low-they can only play down to a G below their staff.
-Overall, the piece is alittle on the lengthy side, due mostly to repetition in different keys-but I it's actually not that big of a deal.
-Everything in the piece either started on beat 1, or beat 3, which could get boring. Fixing this(by changing it occasionally to 2, 4 or an up-beat) would probably help make the piece more interesting and not make it feel "too Long".
-I want you to try this really quick-On the second to last measure, delete the 1st fermata. I think (IMO) it would sound better like this.

Overall (again) I think this piece is quite nice! Most of my feedback was in instrument range, which you can easily learn in a matter of minutes. Keep writing! Like maestro said, "your pieces have something fundamental in them that makes them very enjoyable."

Title: Re: Dahans' compositions: UPDATE: Birthday present for RUTO

Impossibility is the same as ignorance, in this case. If you write music that is far beyond what is technically feasable, no matter how possible it may in fact be, then you'll be hard pressed to find anybody take you seriously. An important aspect of being a good composer is understanding how instruments work, knowing what it takes to play them, and the nuances that go into the finer details of technique. The best way that I know to learn these things, other than finding a teacher, is to find the musicians who play these instruments and have them spot check stuff for you, and have them explain why and how things work.

Yes, I'm afraid both of these comments are true. :/

This is what we are here for, to tell you what works and what you need to improve on. You gift for melody is extraordinary, but you your execution for the orchestra simply needs practice, practical practice at that. When you write for the piano, it's great because you know what goes into its performance. That's what it all comes down to with your music, technicalities of performance. Musically, your music is fine for the most part.

You cannot just look at that and see "your music is fine" because while it's kind of true, you need lots of work in other areas. And yes, playability is important.

I have never said my music is "perfect" ^^. I definitely need LOTS of work, like all of us. We just can improve when we practice. And of course, playability is important too.

This.

He is totally ruining my life. Goliwog's Cakewalk looks/sounds easy but it just has awkwardness throughout.

I am also arranging the First out of the Deux Arabesques for Clarinet... FML... it's in effing E Major (which Means F# Major for Clarinets)

Is it really worth the effort though? I don't play clarinet, but I would assume the original key is always best... just a personal preference.

It would depend on forces your arranging for. It's easier for an exact transcription on the piano than it is to orchestrate another piece, due to transpositions, accidentals, ranges, and other things that go into writing for an orchestra. You could keep it in the original, but you'd make for a miserable arrangement omn behalf of the players.

It is for an audition. Every audition time, the music professors choose a criteria for one of the two songs we have to play.
For this upcoming quarter, one of the pieces must be in E Major (Concert)... meaning F# for us. I still need to find a second song. If I keep it the same, it's D Major, so...

Good luck :D. You can also change the key at the beginning and after you have finished your arrangement, you can change it back to the original key?

Again I say wonderful, you really have a gift for melody. Unfortunately that gift is lost through execution. The first movement started out well enough, but due to a lot of improper chord progressions and bum notes, it left a lot to be desired. Fortunately, it wasn't as bad as your previous quartet and once you settled on your new tonic keys it was fine.

By far the best movement was the second, the theme and variations. Here I saw that you had a motif, you knew your boundaries, and you had a plan; overall it was fairly well done, just a couple of issues, mainly the pizz variation due to the rhythms, a bit to fast to make it sound good in a real setting.

The third was alright, it didn't really stand out to me as a piece other than it being really fast, I'd reccommend changing the meter to cut time with a tempo at half=150, since the pulse is really on the first and third. The middle section you can just leave as is. One glaring problem was on measures 328-336; when you're modulating like that, you don't change keys until you settle on the final chord. You can indicate the progression using accidentals, changes key that quickly will only serve to confuse the players as they have to constantly readjust to the new key, it's easier to read with accidentals.

The fourth was nice, but had many of the same problems as the first. Oh, measures 428-436 made me cringe; I can't stand it when people simple modulate the music up a step, you did it 3 times in a row. If you're going to do something like that, make it flow, don't just shift gears into a new key as a means to get you where you want. Personally, the ending left me wanting something more conclusive, this one was just like "I'm done now, bye."

Haha first of all thanks^^ and thanks for commenting on each movement, that means a lot to me!

1st movement: I definitely know what you mean with improper chord progressions. I can't tell you why I like them, I just love to try out new things. "as bad as my previous quartet" sounds a bit harsh in my opinion xD--- personally, I consider this movement the weakest of all 4.

2nd movement: I have always wanted to write a theme with variations, I don't know really why I have never tried to. And well... that's the final result^^. I totally agree with you with the 3rd variation (pizz), it might be a bit unplayable.

3rd movement: I was in a really bad mood when I wrote this movement. I think you can hear that. Thanks for the tip with the key changes, I will try to improve it!

4th movement: the word "cringe" is also really hard xD. Actually, I like it to move the theme up a step. This one is by far my favourite movement, I can't tell you why.

Anyway, this piece is very emotional and I was really surprised that I finished it so fast. I'd like to know what other members think about it. Too bad, most of them aren't interested in "home-made compositions".
Next, I will try to write a clarinet/piano concerto, as DrP suggested. Sounds like the perfect challange for me!

You post here for criticism, and I such I'm going to tell you what I think of the piece in question. I'm not going to sugarcoat things because that will not help you improve. If you are going to make single-step key changes, it should serve to heighten the tension of the music, not as a means to imply there's something new when really there's not.

Hey, it's dahans live! Not bad, although, you do realize the the actual song "Happy Birthday to You", which you quoted early in this piece, is actually under copyright by Warner Music Group. Europeans won't be allowed to use the song freely until...2016. Be careful who sees this video.

Other than that, this piece has you written all over it; the chord progressions, the piano technique you frequently employ, overall it sounds like something you wrote.

Fun piece you have there. And if what Zach said is true, better watch out for those youtube cops XD

Like your other pieces before, there is little to no transitions to new themes (and I do believe they're themes, each one standing alone save for the overarching Happy Birthday theme). If you're going to have so many themes I would try to develop into them instead a few seconds of transition. Warps you directly to the new themes that themselves don't last for that long a time frame which makes you wonder about the importance of each one.
Parallel octaves in the bass for 90-95% of the time? Try to write some unique lines for the bass a lot more, creating more independent lines and more interest to that aspect of the piece. The line it has near the end drew so much attention because nothing like it had been heard before. It works, but you can also use the left hand for far more clever things.
Surprise us more. Keep us on our toes. After a couple of seconds in each theme, the theme became predictable. No one knew what the opening to Beethoven's 5th would do on it's premiere and it contained many surprises throughout the piece with only 2 themes. Try for more surprises.
Rest a bit more too. Give the audience a chance to breathe and realize what happened. Silence or absent of lines could be used very well in the right context.

I hope you don't take offense with the Beethoven reference; I think it's a compliment to be compared to the greats. =D
Great listening experience; keep composing!

You know, I got the impression that this was mostly improvised. If so, kudos man, I've done that before on stage and it is not a smooth experience if your are not improvising of off familiar material.

1) yeah thanks for the reference with beethoven.  i don' think it's offensive. And yeah i know what you mean with the elaboration of themes and the bass line. I did that in kind of 2 to 3 hours one afternoon, as a result there isn't sheet music for it. I would have taken more interest in a decent bass line if i had written it on my pc. But on the whole, you're right I need to work on that very badly. In this case I kind of wanted to write as many melodies as possible. I thought that to be a challange.
2) there are youtube cops?:o
3) thank you both for critizicing me. It really helps me a lot

Here's a good Rule of Thumb: More does not mean Better. In fact, in music More often takes away from the piece as a whole.

Well, you could use the Haydn-Method and just cast yourself to a remote area, away from all other music and distractions, and try writing music then. Being isolated will force you to be original, since you'll have nothing to derive from (except from memory, which will fade as time passes).
